Fairy Lantern with Tutorial

** Please read to the bottom of this post for answers to common questions. Or visit THIS PAGE**

Gina's Designs Laser Cuts has a brand new name: Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts and I have a brand new tutorial for you!

I was sort of hesitiant about using this as a design team project because it's so easy and requires just a few simple supplies... but it's soooo stinkin' cute!

Fairy Lanterns with Tutorial - Nichola Battilana

Fairy lanterns! Now, anyone who has experience with real fairies knows that it is not a good idea to stuff them into jars. They will pinch and nip and basically make your life unpleasant if you treat them rudely. These jars are a fairy friendly alternative. Perfectly dreamy as a little nightlight, or magical accent.

Fairy Lanterns with Tutorial - Nichola Battilana

Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts carries the Garden Fairy cutouts in three different sizes so you can create a variety of lanterns in an assortment of jars. And if fairies aren't your thing... well, there's always baby dragons from the Dragons Shape Setfloral elements, or whatever suits your fancy!

Fairy Lanterns with Tutorial - Nichola Battilana

The tutorial can be found HERE on my YouTube channel (and below), but here are a few tips:

• Sticking the figures directly on the glass (generally) yields better, more detailed results
• Use two or three battery powered tea lights. More light = stronger silhouette effect.
• Take care how many layers of paper you use, how much overlap there is. (A little is ok.)
• Use thinner school glue for the paper and thicker tacky glue for the glitter
• DO NOT use real candles inside

Finally, the supply list:
Gypsy Soul Garden Fairy cutouts
• Glass jam jars with lids
• Thin tissue paper
• White school glue
• Quality white glue
• Clear glitter
• Twine
• Floral embellishments (THESE sugared blooms from Petaloo are gorgeous)
• Battery powered tealights or led string lights

NOTE: Please DO make for friends, as gifts, as a group project but remember that making them commercially (including teaching as a paid class) is not permitted.

___________________________

EDIT: to answer a few questions

1. The cutouts are available here: Gypsy Soul Garden Fairy cutouts
2. YES she does ship internationally. International customers might want to try placing an order via Alpha Stamps HERE. I also have a few listed in my etsy shop HERE.
3. The size you buy would depend on the size of the jar you are using. If using a pint sized canning jar small or medium is probably a safe bet.
4. "Can I use/do/change x,y,z ?" Give it a try! Experimenting is part of the fun of making.
5. DO NOT use real candles. Safety first!
6. NO, selling replicas of this project is NOT permitted. Seriously, just be inspired, add your own style and vision, and create your own version of a fairy lantern.  If you are selling handmade you should be selling YOUR ideas and style, not mine. Think of it this way, you wouldn't copy a book word for word... don't carbon copy this project. For fun? Make as many as you like. For profit? Make your own version.

Note: I am not the owner of Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts or Alpha Stamps. They send me products, I use them in my work, that is all. If you have a question about ordering products, please direct them to the company you are ordering from.

    1. Terry your art is awesome, if you would not mind, I ask this because you mentioned your daughter, I recently lost a family member who was very ill for a long time..one of her worries is that her 6 year old son will forget her, they were building a Fairy Garden together, do you think a little boy would find this comforting,
      thank you for your time.

      Delete
    2. Possibly a fairy or larger fairy garden; any little boy would love. Or if you have the ability; a silouette of his Mother{or a woman holding a fairy in her hand} made from a favorite photo enlargement.

    3. My 6 yr old grand-daughter is a believer like her Gramma! Her Dad (my son) is NOT. He tried to tell me when he was about 12 they didn't exist - I told him to believe what he wished; leave MY beliefs alone!

  6. I love this. I save the glass jars from candles that I have finished burning. They are easy to clean and are so plain - no stamped words or textures. They would work well for a project like this. What a wonderful gift for a young girl's birthday or favors for a birthday party. Thank you for sharing this.

  11. What size of Fairy Cutouts did you use? Small, Medium, or Large?? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete

    1. The top image with the three jars has all three sizes. From left to right: medium, large, small. Some of the large ones are pretty big (taking wings into consideration) but would look great in big pickle jars. Most of the samples at the end are medium. If you're using baby food jars I would opt for the small. Hope that helps!

    2. Thank you for your quick reply! I am adding your beautiful idea to a class on Wildflowers I am teaching at our homeschool co-op, we can have a whimsical day, look at Flower Fairie books and use flowers we have studied to embellish the lids. I think the girls will love them! Thanks for the inspiration!

    2. Hi, another question on this as I am planning on making them today. DO you just drop the tea lights into the jar with them turned on? What if they land flame down, is that fine and will it have the same effect, or do you keep turning the jar till it lands upright?

    1. It's a request from one maker to others to respect the spirit in which the project is shared. I am absolutely 100% fine and dandy with people making and giving these as gifts or for fun. I also fully support people who are inspired to create their own new and improved version of this project with their own added flair. I am not ok with outright copying for profit. How would I know? Chances are I won't, but that won't stop karma from doing her thing.

    1. I did. I think it sort of evens things out (but it does make the tissue more tearable). I would definitely experiment and see what works for you.

      Delete
    2. If you are going to glitter, you have to glue the outside of the tissue also, correct?

  25. Some have more of a yellow tint. Is that because of the color of the tea light? Also in the demonstration video and final product did you use just one layer of tissue paper?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the colour of your tea lights will affect the hue of your jar. And yes, there is only one layer of tissue on the jars.

      Delete
  26. Replies
    1. I'd use cheap glue for the paper to be honest. I love tacky glue. It is my go-to stuff for gluing just about everything, but in this case I think it might be a little thick for the tissue and cause some tearing. That said, I absolutely encourage you to experiment and see what works for you.

I would love to make these as party favors for my daughter's baby shower but not sure of an appropriate theme that will go along with a baby shower. Anyone have thoughts or ideas to help me?? Food, decorations, etc. to go along with the fairy lanterns? Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Never land theme would work well. Pirates, a ship, mermaids, and a large crocodile (bonus is you make it tick), and some shadow cut outs of your daughter and her partner maybe for decorating.
Foods: you could put out anything for finger foods with a few decorations scattered through them or serve them on plates with maps or fairies on them.
Original Peter Pan cartoon sound track playing in the background.
      .....
      Just fairies in general.
Mushrooms and mushroom circles as decorations. giant leaves or wildlife pictures on the walls
foods - serve on plates that look like saucers. Breads, honey, milk/cream... so a nice honey cornbread would be nice, or sticky buns, fruit and whipped cream/a white fruit dip, etc,
wings as favors or accessories for those who want to wear them. If you just have paper wings that are pinned on you can do a game - anyone who says the word baby looses a wing to the one who catches them. Most wings at the end of the party wins a prize. Or do mushrooms and anyone who can make a fairy circle wins.. wings on baby on a tummy pose and picture in a signable frame would be a beautiful guest book and gift for mom

  47. How long do the glow stick ones last

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No idea. These ones have battery powered tea lights inside.

      Delete
    2. It would depend on the glow sticks used. Assuming you don't cut them open they will last the time on the package. Standard glows ticks last 4-6 hours for the 4inch ones. Earrings are about 2-3 hours give off more specific lights but are a lot dimmer.
Cutting them open gives a splattered glowing effect but only lasts about 20 min once exposed to the air.

  48. I think I'm going to try this with a hanging type light bulb.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please be very careful when placing anything near something that generates heat. Lightbulbs can get very hot and placing something flammable near them may be dangerous.

      Delete
  49. When applying the tissue paper, are you covering the outside of the tissue paper with school glue also? Or just smoothing it out with a clean brush?

    ReplyDelete
  50. One suggestion. Since glitter tends to flake off, use a glossy dimensional adhesive on top of the glitter once the glue has dried. Make sure it's glossy- matte finish adhesives will dull the glitter, but a glossy one will retain the shimmer.
Alternately, use glitter glue. As for lights, glow stick materials can be toxic, so cutting them open is NOT recommended.

  66. made one of these with my granddaughter 2 weeks ago, using a large mason jar, and yellow tissue paper ( we didn't have any white on hand) I went to AC moore and bought Tinker bell fairy 3d stickers. Can't wait to order them. I got medium and large, the large are very large so I would go with the mediums for the quart size mason jar.

    1. I know full well that I'm not the first to come up with the concept of a fairy lantern or shadow work. Honestly, there are 100's of years of inspiration to draw upon and there is absolutely no reason to replicate this exact project for profit. Be inspired, make your own version. If you are selling creative work it should look like YOURS not a copy of someone elses pieces.

  74. I've made a number of these now but am not happy with the way they look when they're not "on". I've tried three different clear glues, gradually using less each time but they still end up looking streaky with quite obvious white streaks even when i'm careful to spread the glue evenly. Any advice or is this the way the all come out? Thanks in advance for any input.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but you might want to try using more glue. I use a boatload and when dry there are no streaks. You might also try thinning the glue with a bit of water. The glue I use is very inexpensive school quality glue which is quite thin. Good luck!

  78. What type of instant glue did you use exactly? I tried gorilla glue but, it caused the glass to turn white when it dried and left a haze around the cutouts.

  81. would a solar light be bright enough? (like the ones that are on the stakes you can put outside to illuminate your sidewalk)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Give it a try, but I don't think so. They look best if the light is quite bright. Also, if you keep the solar light inside, it may not get enough light to charge.

  82. I did this project and used a string of moon lights 3.5 feet long. Made a hole in the lid to thread the lights in so battery pack and on off switch is outside of jar. Beautiful can't wait to do more with my granddaughters. Thank you

  83. I made these with a girl I'm mentoring and she loved it! then I brought mine home and my family begged me to make them some as gifts, excellent idea thank you!!! for anyone looking for a version that requires less purchases, you can find tons of fairy silhouettes online that work just as well (make sure to glue with the black facing out) and if you have coloured tissue paper from Easter or something as long as its light it doesnt have to be white, in fact for kids the colours might even be cooler, i used light blue for one and purple for another and it looks beautiful

  84. Can you use frosting spray on the jars? What affect does the glue/tissue paper give the jars that the frosting spray doesn't

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can use frosting spray, the effect is similar. There are a few reasons for using one vs the other. Tissue paper is MUCH less expensive and more widely available than frosting spray. The paper technique is less toxic and makes for a much more 'child friendly' project. I've done it both ways and although the spray can give a neater finish, papering provides better coverage (more opacity than the spray).

  85. Hello,
I´m looking for a shop in germany with these cutouts. Can anybody help me?

  86. Where did you get and what the three sizes of the jars that you used?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The large jar pictured above is a large quart sized jar. Standard pint sized jars work perfectly. You can buy them where ever canning supplies are sold. Our grocery store sells them during canning season.

  87. What instant glue did you use to adhere the fairy to the glass? Mine won't stick!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I recommend experimenting until you find what works for you. I know that may not seem terribly helpful, but people swear by certain adhesives that work for them, and they never work for me. Keep at it! You'll find something.

  88. Does the tissue paper have to be white? Could it be another color as long as the paper is thin?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Experiment! Give it a try. I'm sure as long as it is thin tissue you'll have a similar effect.

  89. Also do you have to use wood cut outs, can you print out a Silhouette and use that? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The cutouts I used are not wood, they are thick card. You're just looking to block the light creating a shadowed effect.

  93. Nichola, I just read through the comments. You, my dear, are the world's most patient person. ;-) I just want to thank you for sharing this wonderful, magical project with the public. In fact, I adore your website and can't wait to try everything! Wishing you a shower of good karma.

  95. i've seen these at craft fairs for sale, do you own the copyright? i make outdoor lanterns with different mediums and thought i would add fairy lanterns and halloween lanterns but don't want to infringe on any copyright

    1. Outdoor, different materials... you're good.

I'm not the only person who makes fairy lanterns and the idea isn't new. I don't mind if people replicate these as gifts, but I do not allow outright copying of my work for profit/commercial use. I use the analogy of a book. There are loads of books and some tell similar stories, but copying word for word is wrong. If you're selling work it should look like YOU made it, not someone else.

  98. I came across this page looking for ideas for a fairy garden for my 3 year old. This was so cute I had to make one for her.

You can find everything at the dollar store. I bought a craft knife, Tissue paper, battery powered tea light.

Use new tissue paper. The less wrinkly it is the better. I tried 3 times with paper that was from a gift bag it didn't work. So I bought some from the dollat store. But if you do mess up you can put the lid on the jar tight and wash it with hot soapy water and try again.

I didn't want to wait for the fairy cut outs by mail so I just found some fairies online and carefuly cut them out with a craft knife. It looks the same.

  100. Would acrylic matte medium work like school glue? Or would I need to thin it out? I'm trying to find something waterproof

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly, I'd spend the $1 and get the cheap school glue. Based on feedback from others, the better quality/thicker adhesive may leave a sort of streaky finish. Then maybe apply a top coat to seal it. Experiment and let me know how it goes.

  101. My daughter (6) and I just made a trial version as she is having a craft party at home for her birthday. We thought it would be a wonderful idea for the girls to make their own fairy in a jar. Thanks for a great tutorial, with only a little guidance she did a pretty good job all my herself. It looks absolutely adorable, can see her making a few for a collection!

  102. I'm trying to do this, but I'm using vinyl instead of the cutouts. But at daytime, they are showing. And on your lanterns, they don't :( Am I using too thin tissue paper?
Living in Norway, so perhaps my kind of tissue paper and yours are not the same thicknes.. Any suggestions?
Made one yesterday with Glossy Mod Pogde and a really thin layer of white glitter, but still not happy with the showing of the fairy in daytime.
Maybe try a different color on the vinyl than black..

The lanterns you have made are gorgeous, by the way :D

    1. I can see the cut outs faintly on mine when there is no light. I've tried a few things to totally hide them, but if the jars are too thickly covered then that hinders the shadow effect. If you figure out a brilliant solution, be sure to let me know your secret ;)

  103. If I were to make some for our class reunion (50 yrs) & use our school colors, logo & initials do I need permission? Also thought about then giving them away as class gifts, you know, farthest traveled, most grandkids, etc. Any problem?

  104. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing project! I just finished making 15 for my wedding centrepieces for this summer. The glitter that I thought was clear actually has a pinky tinge.. still really pretty. What is the benefit of using a thicker glue for the glitter? I just used the same white school glue, I didn't realize I was supposed to use a thicker one.. oops.. I absolutely love them!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thicker glue will help the glitter stay in place better and longer, but as long as you don't mind a little trail of pixie dust, don't worry about it.

  105. HI Nichola: Have made 42 of these for my daughters wedding in different sizes. We wrapped them in tissue paper - but the glitter has fallen of mostly. I am going to re-glitter (two weeks till wedding). How can I get the glitter to stay on better and any suggestions as to how to wrap for travel that won't rub glitter off? txs so much - canada

    1. I really like Aleene's Tacky Glue. It's what works best for me. There is still some loss, but I think with glitter you'll always have some fall off. There are some glitter sprays on the market, I've never used them but you could see about trying that. Best wishes to the bride!

  106. Didn't see my comment so I'm trying again. I ordered the fairies from Gypsy Soul. I melded them by hand to bend to the curve of the jar. I glued them, but they won't stay permanently. They stick at first but then fall off. I've tried super glue, hot glue, elmers and nothing has worked. Any ideas?
