I am not a painter

I am not a painter
... but I do it anyway.

Still running with the inspiration of the AGO's Mystical Landscapes exhibit, I've made a handful of little paintings. Canvas' covered with starry nights, strange moons and fluttering birds. All my favourite things mushed up together.

I wish my hands would cooperate with the things that my mind dreams up. I wish my painting was fine and delicate.

I *wish* I was a painter in the same way I wish I was poet, or filmmaker, or writer. In a way, I think I'm still waiting to figure out what I am.

What sort of strange bird am I? Maybe I'm not a bird at all! Maybe I'm a moth or a bat!

One thing is for certain, I am not a painter.

But I do it anyway.

The 'do-ing' is the most important part of all. Do what you love. Enjoy what gives you pleasure and joy and don't allow what you are (or are not) to get in the way.

  2. You are a painter. You are painting, therefor you are a painter. Don't sabotage yourself by telling yourself what you think can't do. Just hush, and do it.

  3. WOW, those are brilliant. I love them all but my favourites, if I had to choose are the Robin and the ravens. OMG those ravens! One of my fav birds of all time. I wish I could do what you do. I wish I could get what's in my head, onto paper! You are 90% there, the only thing stopping you is you. We are our own worst critics. You are amazingly talented Nichola, truly an inspiration to us all. Thank you very much for sharing these lovely paintings.

  5. You ARE a painter. They are lovely. I imagine them small, how big are they? I like very much the details on the birds and the bath and moth, and your coloured starry moon night skies are beautiful.

  8. I have wanted to be Maxfield Parrish or Pyle or a Wyeth for years. Lol! I will never be. I love your paintings whether they are Dr.Who or extraterrestrial moths and bats. You must have a lovely Soul because all your artwork is so peaceful and magical and happy. I am so glad to look at your blog. It is a high point in my morning.

  14. You paint, therefor you ARE a painter. . . strange bird, bat or moth? Why limit yourself. . . perhaps you're a fairy-kissed hybrid gifted with bits and baubles of all three? : )

These are beautiful paintings because they come from your heart and soul. You make, so you are. . . a maker of things, no matter the medium. It's just who you are. : ) Keep unfolding the layers and discovering the secrets within. . . and may they never end!
